AD| Applying for university is a long and gruelling process, but so worth it in the end. You just have to make sure you’re sufficiently prepared and eventually it will all fall into place. Your sixth form or college should have plenty of advice for you but here are some additional tips to help you prepare.
Connect with Course Mates on Social Media
The sooner you start to make friends at your new university the better, as this will settle your nerves and help you feel more excited about the change. There might be different Facebook groups for your course or other tenants of your shared accommodation that you can chat to online.
Set up a Bank Account
You’ll need to set up a student bank account. Most of them offer a free overdraft option which will be handy for you, especially if you don’t intend to work whilst at university.
Learn to Cook
One great way to spend your summer before university is learning to cook. You won’t be able to live off takeaways when you’re on a student budget so you should try out some new recipes before you leave, especially if you’re moving into student accommodation.
Buy Your Essentials
One exciting aspect of going to university is buying all of your essentials and gadgets. You’ll need some bedding, basic toiletries and towels and a laptop if you don’t already have one. Have a look into getting yourself some money saving items like a railcard and an NUS card.
Do Some Research
Before you move, you’ll need to research the area so that you get to know the bus routes and where the local supermarkets are. What’s more, you may want to see if there are any jobs available that you could apply for so that you don’t have to worry about money too much during your time at university.

Definitely agree with learning to cook I am still hopeless at it in my third year and I wish I learnt ages ago but never too late, I am going to try and make it my 2021 goal! Really great tips 🙂

My school gave us a crash course in cooking on a budget before we left for uni which was really helpful! I hope this post helps lots of students having a bit of a terrible time at uni because of covid!

Agreed with all of this! It’s really important to know how to cook and to build relationship with friends. You need people to get by nevertheless.

Hi Kayleigh. Some great tips, there. I (just about) remember going to uni and it can be quite a culture shock. I do wish I had spent more time learning to cook different recipes – there were a few that I cooked really well but … the appeal starts to wane after you’ve had the same meal 5 times in a week! Learn to cook and take some cooking books with you so that you have some different recipes to try 🙂 Oh, and consider taking a padlock or two for lockers – some students like to ‘borrow’ your stuff if they run out and you aren’t around.

Another thing, also make sure you can manage your time, it will save you a lot of heartache and stress in university.

Such good advice! Connecting with my classmates before going was great and made me feel a bit less clueless. I definitely should have opened a student bank account sooner though!
