AD | Radar detectors have been around for over 50 years. It’s been many people’s goals to be able to drive quickly from Point A to Point B without incurring the wrath… and a ticket … of a highway patrolman. Detectors are supposed to keep their cars invisible from a radar gun – though not from the judgment of a cop’s eye.
Before you decide on radar detector installation, it’s important to know if they work. Otherwise you might wish you had saved that money to pay for a speeding ticket.
Budget or Higher-End?
This being the Internet, there are plenty of forums and websites devoted to radar detectors. Many people think that the budget ones tend to give off false positives since they can’t cut through all the frequencies. Learning what direction the detector is getting the alerts from can be useful – like if it’s in the front, then that would be more likely a police car than if it was on the side.
What About Lasers?
The police have incorporated lasers into their array of ways to attempt to catch speeding cars. The lower-end detectors cannot catch this and you risk getting a ticket increases… but there are some that do have the ability to detect the lasers and alert you.
Know What You Are Doing
If you do wind up getting a radar detector, you need to understand the technology that you are using. It also takes the ability to discern what the sounds the detector makes and adjust your driving accordingly. Technology has allowed the detectors to pair with smart phones and there are ways to get into a network of other drivers so that people can work together.
Ultimately, you have to ask yourself if the price for these are worth it, especially those that have more features. You also have to make sure that you are not in a state where either radar detectors (either in the vehicle or on the windshield) or the jammers are illegal. Then you might find yourself facing a lot more hefty fine than a speeding ticket.
Speeding can be dangerous – this is not to be construed as a post advocating for it. If you do get a radar detector, it should be used for you to have peace of mind while you are driving rather than something to use to be reckless on the road. Then you can truly enjoy your drive.
