AD | Learning how to utilize space is a part of being an artist. When it comes to a gallery wall, you want your work to have leg room where people can take each piece for its value. Spacing your work is an art in itself. Here are some tips to help you give your work much-needed breathing room.
Giving Your Art Some Elbow Room
You never want a picture hanging system to show your art in a way that looks like you’re packing in a subway station. At this point, the pieces are too close and you need to find a way to space things out. Start by taking away the smaller pieces.
If you feel like there’s too much white space, then you may want to rearrange everything to fit properly. Start by spreading each piece out at least 2 inches apart. Painter’s tape or paper squares are great tools to help you recreate the arrangement on the wall.
Also, you want to look at the mock arrangement from different viewpoints. Look at it from the room’s entrance, sit down in a chair, and look up from a distance. You may have to rework the adhesive tape so it looks more visually dynamic.
Don’t Spread It Out Too Wide
If it seems like there’s too much space between pieces, you may need to add more art on the wall or just put them 1 1/2 inches apart. You never want your art to look like it’s wandering in the distance. You can use a collage of painting or photos to help utilize the space efficiently.
The key is not to have a cluttered look, but something that has a cohesive feel. Almost as if it were meant to be together as a part of the room.
Keep The Pieces Within the Same Realm
Having a bit of diversity in your art is great. However, you have to find some common ground if you have a group of pieces on one section of your wall. Maybe the paintings you have are all different shades but they have the same watercolor aesthetic.
Maybe you have an art deco vibe and the paintings you put on your frame hanging system stem from the 1950s. All of this is important because it tells a story. If you have art fanatics over your house, you can break things down and impress them with your knowledge.
