One of the most forgotten and unloved areas of any bedroom is the window, probably because it’s the coldest space in the room but also because our relationship with it ends when we draw the curtains.
However, dressing your window is a fantastic way to transform your bedroom’s style without overdoing it. It could be the missing link you are looking for if your bedroom is a bit boring, bland, or otherwise soulless.
Want to get started? We reveal how to dress your bedroom window below with tips from interior designers and sleep experts.
Let’s jump in!
Made-to-measure secrets
The trick to a gorgeous window display is made-to-measure curtains and blinds, preferably both, so you can always maintain privacy.
Our preferred combination is a roller blind and curtains – we use the roller blind during the day, half down and the curtains at night.
The great thing about roller blinds is you can get them with exciting patterns, giving your bedroom window a solid block of style.
Curtains add unbeatable texture, helping soften your bedroom, especially if you choose basketweave or another heavily textured fabric.
Another option is Venetian blinds and perfect-fit blinds; these are better for privacy and light diffusion but can also give off office vibes.
Colours and patterns are critical
Another critical aspect of curtains and blinds is colours and patterns. Ideally, your blinds should be an eye-catching colour and your curtains a subdued colour, with this configuration giving your window display balance.
You can add more eye candy with patterns like florals, insects, or geometric stripes – these will help inject personality into your display.
Avoid flashy colours like lime green, bright orange, and neon pink unless you are going for a psychedelic 60s look.
Add plants and greenery
One of the best things you can do to transform your window display is to purchase houseplants with fancy pots.
We love succulents, cacti, and the white bird of paradise. Another option is a bonsai tree to give your window display a dose of Japanese zen.
Not only will plants give your window display a natural boost, but watching plants and trees grow and change is one of life’s little pleasures.
Decorative window film
Did you know that you can buy window film that mimics stained glass and Art Nouveau etchings? That’s not all – you can also get window film with leaf, tree, and animal designs, although these are more suited to kid’s rooms.
Decorative window film is perfect if your bedroom window doesn’t have much of a view and you want to increase privacy.
Paint your windowsill
Another fantastic way to make your window display stand out is by painting the windowsill a different colour than the surrounding wall.
For instance, if your wall is white, paint the windowsill grey, duck egg blue, or any other colour you love. Windowsills are a blank canvas for colour, but make sure your tone has a greyish tint so that it isn’t garish.
Play with windowsill symmetry
The things you place on your windowsill – plants, figurines, candles, incense, photo frames, etc. – should be symmetrical across the width.
Symmetry happens when both sides of a composition mirror each other, such as two bedside tables on both sides of a bed.
What we mean by this is things on the left should be symmetrical with things on the right, and the thing in the middle should be a little larger than the things next to them. This will give your window display a professional touch.
De-clutter and keep things simple
The worst thing you can do is overcrowd your window with ornaments, bits and bats, textures, and colours. Keeping things simple means preserving space between elements and ensuring that visual features complement one another.Consider ways to add storage to your bedroom if you need more space for things – corner shelves and an ottoman bed are good starting points.

Omg, I love these ideas! I’m currently on the lookout for a new home, and I want big windows with large enough windowsills that I can sit on them, which means I can also decorate them. This gave me some great inspiration already, thank you!

These are great ideas. My bedroom windowsill is empty and definitely looks plain and boring. I would like to get some plants for it, but the window has the sun on it all day long and I’m not sure what plants can withstand that.
