Guest post | The lead up to Christmas can be a totally chaotic, overwhelming and expensive time of the year – especially if you’re trying to save some money on a low income or a tight budget. However, Christmas decoration ideas don’t need to break the bank. You just need a little bit of thought and creativity, and you’re bound to produce something super festive and fun that’ll get you into the Christmas spirit.
By creating, designing and sourcing your own home Christmas decorations, not only will you be saving yourself some money, but you’ll be able to showcase your artistic and creative talents, and produce some more eco-friendly, sustainable decorations that you can re-use year after year. To give you some inspiration this year, here are 7 low-cost budget friendly Christmas home decoration ideas to get you ready for the festive holidays.
Decorate Old Glass Bottles
I’m sure many of us have a few glass bottles lying around the house, most likely previously filled with juices or alcohol. Using glass bottles can be a quick and easy way to make some fabulous Christmas decorations that can be used year after year. Here are a few ideas for decorating your old glass bottles.
- You could try coating them in glue and coloured glitter – I’d opt for greens, golds, silvers and reds as these are super festive colours. Once dry, they can be used for shelf or table decorations, as well as forming a part of your centrepiece for your Christmas dinner table.
- Another idea would be to fit them with fairy lights inside for table displays. Many online retailers sell small fairy lights that can be bought very cheaply. You simply clean out and dry the wine bottle, make sure to remove any branding paper, to ensure you can see though the bottle. Insert the fairy lights through the bottle neck and wind around the bottle in your desired way.
Fill Mason Jars with Festive Accessories
For an eco-friendlier option, you can re-use any old mason jars you have in the kitchen cupboards and fill them with festive accessories such as candles, baubles, candy canes or even pine cones for a simple, yet effective Christmas decoration idea. For an even more festive idea, you could add some tinsel to the base of the jars or even spray the pine cones with some fake snow, and place your jars on a gold/silver platter with some holly and winter berries for a more homely touch.
Floating Candles in Vases
For lovers of candles, this one is for you. Floating candles in vases is something new to me, but the overall effect is so luxurious and spectacular – and you can make them on a budget! Start off by choosing some of your favourite Christmas/Winter themed scented candles – I’m thinking fresh berries, spicy clove and cinnamon, oranges and Christmas tree pine scents.
To put these floating candles together, it’s super simple. Start by filling your vases with holly, greenery and berries, and make sure these are pushed down to the bottom. Next, fill with water and place the lit candle on the top for a super festive decoration idea. Not only will these look amazing on your shelves or tables during the Christmas period, it’ll make your home smell so warming and welcoming!
Decorate with Plants or Greenery
Using greenery is a low-cost way to decorate your home. You’ll be able to find suitable plants from your garden or local park to make a simple and festive display. Items such as pine cones, holly and ivy, winter berries, oranges, cinnamon sticks and ribbons can be used to create a striking, yet affordable mantelpiece or table decoration, perfect for the festive season. Another way to use foliage and greenery to decorate your home is to create traditional Christmas inspired wreaths and garlands filled with Christmas flowers and twinkling fairy lights to instantly bring some brightness into your home. Again, these can also be sprayed with some fake snow for that wintery feel or even sprayed with some festive room sprays/air fresheners for a warming touch.
Create Hanging Ornaments from Unwanted Paper
Paper decorations are probably the cheapest thing you can make, and they definitely won’t look out of place or ugly. You may remember making things like stars and snowflakes during your childhood from scrap pieces of paper, and that’s exactly what you’ll be re-creating here. For this activity, you’ll be recycling old pieces of paper – whether that’s coloured card, wrapping paper, or any other scrap pieces you have in your home, and repurposing it for your Christmas inspired decorations. Depending on the size of the paper you use, your hanging ornaments can be displayed as Christmas tree decorations or even hanging from walls, shelves and doors.
Hang Battery-Powered Fairy Lights
Is there anything more exciting and welcoming that bright and colourful Christmas lights. Using battery-powered fairy lights is a quick and easy way to add some warmth into your home, and help to create a cosy environment. Depending on your chosen decorative theme, you could opt for warm white fairy lights, or for those wanting to share the ultimate Christmas spirit, you could opt for multicoloured lights with reds, greens and blues, for a bolder and more vibrant feel. These fairy lights can be used in a number of places throughout the home, the obvious being wrapped around your Christmas tree, but these can also be hung over windows and doors, or even in hall ways. For those wanting to be a little more creative, you could even layout your fairy lights in some super cute and festive designs for your walls and windows, for example, Christmas trees, present boxes and stars.
Create Your Own Tree Decorations
For those who are feeling extremely artistic, inventive and creative, or even for those with young children in the house, you could spend some quality time together creating your own Christmas tree decorations. Again, another incredibly cheap and affordable festive activity, with the capacity to create some really fun and impressive decorations. Many of us will have a multitude of items around the house that we can use to create our own decorations. Things such as spare arts & crafts materials, paints, old paper, ribbons, cardboard, glitter etc, can be used to help make some really special pieces that you can decorate your tree year and year again – helping you to save money, and have some sustainable Christmas tree decorations that can be recycled and reused every year. A few great ideas include;
- Cut out snowflake shapes from old pieces of cardboard, paint them according to your trees colour scheme, and finished them off with some glitter and even some fun pom-poms for a super easy and kid-friendly activity.
- You may even be able to recycle old Christmas decorations and make them into something more modern and contemporary – a great idea for this is recycling old baubles. You can spray paint the baubles with different colours, accessorise them to make cute Christmas characters or festive ornaments and finish them off with some ribbon.

with the current electricity situation where the country takes turns using electricity and they call it Loadshedding… I am thinking battery powered fairy lights might solve a three-in-one problem…
Not sure if we getting a tree, would probably chop it up for firewood…. maybe making a makeshift one from coathangers and paper and any other materials can put my hands on.

Really cool suggestions – I’d actually really like to try making some tree decorations. We could definitely do with a new tree though, anything I make to put on will fall flat, quite literally probably as all the branches are loose and hanging down. After 20 odd years, you’d think we would have replaced it by now but every year we say “nah, we’ll use it just this year, the last one!”
Thanks for the creative inspiration! xx
