Something that should play one of the most significant roles in what you choose to study should be your passions. The secret to loving what you study, and what you might do in the future in terms of work is having a passion for it. University should be a commitment that you want to make because you are invested in your future, but also because you will be studying something that you what to learn more about.
So how do you make sure that you are choosing the right thing for you?
Why?
This is one of the most important things for you to consider when you are deciding what (and maybe even where) you will study.
Do you need specific qualifications for what you want to do career-wise in the future? There are probably many pathways to the job that you want, the key is for you to find which one is right for you. If you have already been working for a while, but you are ready to go further in your career, then let that be your guide. Discuss the study options with your employer and some of the faculty members too.
Interest
If you are in the age bracket that is heading to uni for the first time, then you have the fantastic opportunity to work out what you are really interested in. Although some people will tell you that you can get a job from studying art, or philosophy, they’re wrong. There is no real reason you can choose a study path that you have a passion for.
Where?
There are some universities and countries that are more ahead in some subject areas. To help you choose the right university, you have to consider that fact. Also, when people have been studying in one place for 3-5 years, it isn’t often the return to their hometown. So, consider where you want to live in the future too.
Realistic
While you should be aiming for the best thing for you, you have to be practical too. Because the price of living in the area with the best course might be slightly out of reach without working more than just a weekend job and student loans. On top of that, there will be moving there, flights, visas, or you might need to have an extra exam result that matches that country.
There are usually many financial help options for you to choose from. But it is best to research what you can and can’t get. Consider how long the course is too.
- Postgrad – 6 months
- Undergrad – 3+ years
- MA – 1 year
- Ph.D. – 4 years
And you will also need to consider the study mode, full time or part-time. Sometimes all the passion in the world can’t make you love a course that just isn’t working for you. Even with all of the research and prep. So try to always keep in mind that you can change your mind and adjust your pat whenever you need too.
