AD | Internships, work placements, work shadowing and work experience or volunteering are all great ways to build skills and try out a certain job or career before investing in it. When looking to pursue your dream career you may consider moving to London to improve your opportunities. As one of the business hubs of the world, London is rich in all job types. Including those in the creative industries.
As someone undertaking a creative PhD I understand the value of getting creative work experience in London. So today I’ll be going over the 5 Benefits of Living in London While Getting Creative Work Experience.
You are surrounded by so much culture
London is so rich in culture. Outside of your work experience you might be looking for ways to improve your historical knowledge, galleries to look at, fashion shows to see. You can find it all, and so much more in London.
It is also home to notable cultural attractions such as the British Museum, the Tate Galleries, the National Gallery, the Notting Hill Carnival and so much more. London has over 192 museums with 11 national museums. There are more than 22,000 music performances a year across London’s 300+ music venues.
There are endless job opportunities
In London there are always available job opportunities. London is a home to many businesses! It’s a global capital with millions of visitors and residents. These range from the most basic jobs to specialist creative jobs, there is something for everyone on the employment spectrum.
Creative jobs are notoriously easier to find in capital cities. It has been suggested that post lockdown there is over 65,000 available jobs in the creative arts. Having the right work experience will help you excel you above those who are applying. London is the place to be if you’re a tech graduate looking to start your career.
If you are in need of a small part time job around your work experience, London has some of the highest rates of pay in the UK. Which is just another perk of living in London for creative work experience. Beyond Academy is one of the most affordable paid internship companies out there. I highly recommend checking out their art, design and photography internships if you are looking for creative work experience.
Plenty of housing options
There are so many housing options in London, which cater to most budgets. It’s not an understatement to say, there are heaps of housing options all throughout London and it’s very easy to find a place. You can find affordable housing options, such as flats, house shares or spare rooms. There are plenty of landlords and estate agents who can help you find the best option for your budget. Especially if you are living in the capital for work experience. Finding an affordable place is key.
If you do move to London be careful of scams. Such as transferring money to landlords you’ve never met, who say they need to see your finances before you apply. Remember to check reviews of any estate agents or landlords that you use to make sure they are legitimate.
Multiple transport links to the UK and the rest of the world
When you’re undertaking work experience in a creative industry you’re going to want to get out and about. London has the underground system which makes it so affordable to go out and visit new parts of the capital. It also gives you the option to travel to other cultural towns such as Manchester and York at a really affordable rate.
Being located in London means that Heathrow is close by, and you can get direct flights to almost anywhere in the world. And with six major airports and the Eurostar international train terminal at St. Pancras you can go almost anywhere you’d like with little to no notice. It’s so easy to catch a plane to Paris, Amsterdam or Italy because budget airlines and train ticket deals make travel affordable.
Fantastic restaurants and diverse food
London has an incredibly diverse population, and that’s directly reflected in the food scene. You can almost any cuisine that your heart desires. When picking a new town to live in, you’re going to want to get the best experiences possible. In London you have all of these food options available at your fingertips. With over 15,000 restaurants in the capital you won’t be dissappointed.
Speaking of food, you aren’t just limited to in-person dining experiences. Uber Eats and Deliveroo make food deliveries super accessible and delivery is available in all London zones. Meaning you can enjoy new and exciting food from the comfort of your own home. Which is a win win.

Reading about it is full of job opportunities felt so good. I didn’t know of the creative jobs atleast. That seems the best. On housing I had in mind that it would be expensive though. And I love what I’ve heard and seen of their transport system in media and from people. Great post on your homeland. Xx
