It can be hard to find good tips for living an eco-friendly lifestyle. There are so many tips out there, to help you gain sustainable living ideas. In this post I’ll be going over 5 tips to help you start living an eco-friendly lifestyle.
Home Improvements
There are many sustainable changes you can make within your home if you’re looking to create a more eco-friendly household. It is important to make a change wherever possible, and your home is something you have control over – so why not make greener decisions?
Below is just a few ideas to get you started:
- Use eco-friendly cleaning products – Many cleaning products containing detergents, preservatives, or foaming agents are made from toxic chemicals that wash up into streams and rivers, causing water pollution. You can make your own natural cleaners by mixing vinegar, lemon juice and bicarbonate of soda. This is a sustainable and cost effective alternative that reduces toxic chemicals and plastic packaging.
- Insulation – Did you know that 40% of the energy produced in your home is lost through your doors, windows or gaps in the floor. Fill these to keep heat in.
- Bio-degradable household production – This could include recycled toilet paper, natural ingredient shampoo, natural deodorant, bamboo toothbrush and washcloths.
- Energy Efficient Appliances – When it’s time to replace your appliances check the energy efficiency label which runs from A-G, with A being the most energy-efficient.
- Smart thermostats and energy efficient lighting.
Reduce Food Waste
- Buy less food than what you need – Most of us overbuy food, to reduce waste under buy your meals just slightly. This way you have wiggle room for leftovers or a takeaway.
- Make use of your freezer – Freeze things so that they don’t go out of date. This is especially useful for fruit and vegetables.
- Use your food waste – Use your vegetable peels for stock, or compost it!
- Consider dates – Sell by dates and use by dates are only an estimate, make sure to check your food before you throw it out as it might be okay to use.
Avoid Single Use Plastics
- Refuse plastic cutlery when you order takeaways or food on the go.
- Use refills for laundry, washing up and soap so you don’t repurchase unnecessary plastic.
- Opt for plastic free options when shopping, such as fruit and vegetable without wrapping.
- Make sure to take your own bags out with you when you go shopping so you aren’t inclined to buy plastic buys with every purchase.
- Consider Bespoke ecommerce packaging if you are business owner and you need to use wrapping and packaging for your products.
- Use shampoo and conditioner bars for yourself
Shop Consciously
- Look for companies that are environmentally focused.
- Wait 14-30 days before you make a purchase.
- Look for product certifications such as the Leaping Bunny, B-Corp and Climate Neutral.
- Shop with companies that have ethical practices, and that offer warranties on their products.
Think About Transportation
- If you require a vehicle for your day to day life, consider swapping to an electric vehicle,
- If you can ditch your car and use public transport consider this as an option, or consider swapping to a bike if you can.
- If it’s under a 30-minute walk, walk or ride your bike rather than using a car.
- Combine your trips into one journey so you’re not making multiple journeys per week.
On the surface, it can be incredibly daunting to reduce your environmental footprint, especially when you see that others around you are not doing their part. But when you break it down into small steps, you realise you have more power than you thought. Use these steps to help you make relevant changes.

What a great post with so many useful tips. I’ve always underbought on food, and it really helps minimise waste. In fact we barely chuck anything out, as most things can go in the freezer which really helps. We’ve also just started to add insulation in our loft, so fingers crossed that makes a difference soon xx
