Being able to maintain and manage a blog, and writing content on a regular enough basis to keep readers there is far from easy. However, it can be even harder if you’re not sure how to grab your reader’s attention in the first place. There are a lot of blogs out there that look dry and read as dry as they look and you don’t want to be counted amongst them. As such, we’re going to look at a few ways to give your blog the spark that it needs.
Get a reliable host
In this increasingly speedy digital age, it shouldn’t be too much of a surprise that people are getting much less patient with websites, especially those that can a minute or more to load. There are ways to optimize your site to make sure that it loads quicker, such as resizing images to make them fit the resolution they need to be, but choosing a more reliable host is going to be the single best chance that you can. It can come with other benefits, such as a more secure site, for instance, but speed is the key here.
Format your text well
Your content might be very well written, full of charm, wit, and great information, but that might not matter all that much if your reader is looking at it as a wall of text. Their eyes are going to start to glaze over, regardless. Choosing the right paragraph lengths to allow your text to flow naturally from one point to the next is crucial. Your content should be skimmable, and this can mean using Bold fonts to highlight certain aspects. Readable fonts, headings and subheadings, and a table of contents for the longer pieces can all make sure that your content is easy to read. Formatting your posts is as vital an art as writing well.
Find your voice and don’t be afraid of it
When you read your own text back, or even out loud to yourself, how does it sound? Does it sound like anyone could have written it if they have the same information or objective as you? If that’s the case, then you might want to try a little harder to find your own voice. There is something to be said for not being overbearing or obnoxious in your writing, but if you can inject a little humor, personality, or closeness into your writing, then do it.
Use great images for your posts
While the text is, naturally, going to be the most important thing in any blog post, it is far from the only important thing. The visuals matter just as much, and some people are going to judge your blog on the kind of images you use, not just what you write. With help from stock photos by Dreamstime and similar sites, you can make sure that you’re using images that not only accurately reflect the subject matter that you’re talking about, but give you a little more control over your visual branding. It’s how you depict things that matter as much as what you depict.
Find the right visual scheme
Your use of imagery isn’t the only thing that defines the visual branding of your website. There are also themes from Theme Forest and similar sites that can let you change the entire visual branding of the website from top to bottom. There are tons of free themes out there that you can make use of, but there’s no denying that if you’re willing to pay for the premium ones, then you’re less likely to be sharing themes with many more websites.
Know what length your content should be
How you format your content is very important for its readability but so too is the length of that content in the first place. If you have a post that could easily be converted into a short and snappy list, then you should consider doing it. Always leave a little room for flair and personal voice but, in most cases, you want to go with the easiest way to deliver the most information to your audience. Sometimes, this means cutting down the length of an overly wordy post.
The tips above may not, exactly, guarantee you success in blogging, but they can make sure that you’re not making some of the cardinal sins of blogging, at the very least. This gives you a chance to convince the reader with your content rather than being prejudged on the site.

I always worry some of my blog posts are too rambling… but I also don’t want them to be too short. It’s a hard balance sometimes.
